Henri Rousseau: The Ambition of Painting – through July 20, 2026

"Moi-même, portrait-paysage" (Self-Portrait) by Henri Rousseau

The Musée de l’Orangerie, in partnership with the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia, is presenting a retrospective dedicated to Henri Rousseau (1844–1910), highlighting his painting techniques and artistic ambitions.

In order to establish himself in the Parisian art scene, Rousseau explored various subjects and techniques: works exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants, public commissions, portraits of his friends and family, landscapes intended for sale, as well as more personal self-portraits.

The exhibition aims to challenge the common misconceptions surrounding the figure of “Douanier Rousseau” by offering an in-depth analysis of his work. Through a series of thematic themes, it highlights the material aspects of his creations while situating them within the context of the modern art market.
