Exhibition: "Heinz Berggruen: A Dealer and His Collection"
From October 2, 2024, to January 27, 2025, the Musée de l'Orangerie, in partnership with the Berggruen Museum and the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin, presents "Heinz Berggruen: An Art Dealer and His Collection."
The exhibition offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of modern art through the lens of one of the 20th century’s most influential art dealers. Berggruen, renowned for his passion and discerning eye, was able to discover and promote major artists such as Picasso, Braque, and Klee.
The exhibition also draws a fascinating connection to the Académie de la Grande Chaumière: among its many students, artists such as Giacometti, Modigliani, and Matisse forged valuable relationships with Berggruen. As a dealer, he not only encouraged these talents but also played a key role in their recognition. His collection features works by artists who were trained or influenced by this creative milieu, attesting to the academy’s impact on the development of modern art.
This dynamic between the Grande Chaumière and Berggruen highlights the interplay between artistic creation and the art market, illustrating how encounters in places such as the academy shaped careers and influenced the collection of a visionary art dealer. It is an invitation to reflect on the artistic networks and exchanges that nourished modern art, thereby anchoring Berggruen in a living and dynamic tradition.
