Pān Yúliáng. The pioneering Chinese artist who shaped the history of 20th-century art between Beijing and Paris

Pān Yúliáng (1895–1977) was a pioneering Chinese artist who left her mark on 20th-century art history. After studying at the Beijing Academy of Fine Arts, she moved to Paris in 1921, where she enrolled at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. In Paris, she furthered her studies in painting and sculpture, training notably under the sculptor Antoine Bourdelle.

In this iconic studio, she discovered creative freedom and absorbed European artistic influences, while remaining true to her Chinese roots.

Her work has evolved toward sensuous nudes and portraits, in which she blends Western techniques with traditional Chinese themes.

This experience at the Grande Chaumière was pivotal to her work and marked a major turning point in her career, establishing her as one of the first Chinese artists to make a name for herself on the international scene.
